I took her advice and cut the bag 12 x 14. I also added a simple handle that I cut 14″ long.
For the inside I used a Rieley Blake fabric and I covered it with Fusible Vinyl so that I could clean up any spills. The outside is an Anna Maria Horner print.
I love how perfect the zipper turns out using Skip to my Lou’s method.
If you are adding a handle to your bag make sure that you do it before you sew the end closed. I forgot this the first time….this is a picture of my second attempt.
Now….ready to travel!
I promised on twitter that I would post my recipes for Chewy Granola Bars, and Homemade Pop Tarts.
Here is the link of the Pop Tart recipe I used. I filled them with Strawberry Jam and they were AMAZING! Super easy to make and the kids loved them too!
I took several online recipes for the granola bars and then came up with my own. They taste like the chewy bars that you buy, but I am in control of what goes into them
Chewy Peanut Butter Granola Bars
In a sauce pan combine-
2/3 cup Applesauce
1 tsp Vanilla
1/2 tsp Cinnamon
1/2 tsp Salt
Bring to a boil and cook the mixture down until it is thick and sticky. I like to get about 1/2 of the moisture out of it.
Add-
1 cup Dark Brown Sugar
1 cup Honey (or 2/3 cup Agave)
Cook until the brown sugar is no longer grainy. It is just a nice syrup.
Remove the pan from heat and
add-
1 cup Peanut Butter
Mix it in well.
Pour mixture over-
1 cup Quick oats
2 cup regular Oats
5 cups Rice Krispies
Extras-
I add in Flax seeds, wheat germ, raisins, Craisins, nuts depending upon what is in the cupboard.
Pour onto a foil lined Jelly Roll pan and press it flat with your hands. Pressing it helps it all stick together so don’t be afraid to press it firmly.
Refrigerate for at least an hour and then cut into bars.
This makes a HUGE amount of Granola Bars but my family will eat the whole pan in 2 days if I let them.
I would love to hear if you have any other Healthy Recipes for School lunches that you would like to share. It’s going to be a long year with the number of school lunches I have to fix every day… Help!
Love!

I love boxy pouches for holding travel cosmetics. Thanks for sharing the tutorial link. I have a boring shop bought one at the moment that came free with some cosmetics. It’s bright pink satin and whilst it does it’s job I’ve been wanting to make a replacement for ages!
Seriously cute Jana! Fusible vinyl?! I’m going to have to check that out, that’s so cool! I definitely need a bag like this for Sewing Summit!
Thanks for sharing that recipe, I need to try that out!
I am making this this weekend. Lots of sewing because Mr. Romance will be at a class all day Saturday!
